Interests

I am currently interested in philosophical, cognitive and social aspects of science. I’ve written a book on the roles of metaphor in science,
Making Truth: Metaphor in Science and have completed a book on the influences of science in society as seen through the lens of ideas about authority,Imperfect Oracle: The Authority and Moral Authority of Science in Society. The book is to be published in 2009 by Pennsylvania State University Press.

Projects

I am currently working on a paper dealing with how science can be made responsive to the needs and wishes of society, morally, socially and in economic terms, while at the same time retaining sufficient autonomy and internal community structure to sustain creativity and the possibilities of serendipitous discovery and new development.
