What I do
I work for Inter-Research, a small, well-established and independent science publisher in Oldendorf/Luhe, Germany. Our biggest journal is ‘Marine Ecology-Progress Series’. I have various editorial tasks (it’s always interesting working for a small, busy company!) and am Editor-in-Chief of the journal ‘Ethics in Science and Environmental Politics’.

Interests
I am interested in Antarctic and deep-sea research, protozoology, foraminifera, benthic biology, and in science publishing and the communication of science.
Projects
In the process of going through my second career-change, and recently having moved countries for the third time, I am kept rather busy. So – for the moment, I have LOTS of ideas for projects, but limited time to do them all.
One current favourite is the communication of science, including: the need for scientists to relate to the public and policy-makers exactly what it is they do, how to get them to do it, and what tools there have for this; what type of science news makes it to the headlines, how topics are selected and how they are presented; what the contribution of freelance or staff science writers is, etc. It’s not a new topic, but there hasn’t really been much progress for a while, as far as I can tell – while the need for it is on the rise. If you have some strong opinions on this and you’re interested in writing something about it for an academic journal, drop me a line.
