What I do
I currently work in a neurotoxicology laboratory at the University of Southern Maine studying the effects of arsenic on nerve cells in culture. To support my graduate studies I teach high school biology classes as a fellow of the Maine ScienceCorps outreach program. However, I’ll be finishing my program in June, and am looking forward to spending some time outside of a research environment, potentially in the Peace Corps.

Interests
I am interested in the effects that environmental heavy metal exposure, both naturally occurring and anthropogenic, can have on the development of the nervous system. However, I’m becoming more broadly interested in the creative application of science and technology to the challenges facing our world. These are the themes I’ll be exploring in “Leaving the Laboratory” my Nature Network blog.

Projects
Determining the effects of heavy metals on the morphological and cytoskeletal properties of nerve cells. Developing research projects for high school classrooms to conduct in collaboration with our university.
