Interests

Rick’s interests cover issues that blend ocean science, marine managed area (MMA) effectiveness, and sustainable tourism. He looks at the linkage between scientific and social analyses and the policy decision process; implications of differences between biological scales and social scales in MMA design; traditional/indigenous coastal resource management structures, and evaluation of conservation effectiveness. His work attempts to define effective strategies for marine conservation based on peculiarly marine processes and human uses, rather than on a transfer of strategies based on terrestrially derived concepts and social structures.

Rick has worked worldwide in field-based marine science. He has served as marine science specialist for the University of California, Berkeley; Project Specialist for the NSF-funded California Center for Ocean Sciences Education Excellence (COSEE); Designer and Instructor of the award winning NSF–funded UC Berkeley course Communicating Ocean Sciences; consultant to the US National Marine Sanctuary system, and as life science content specialist for KQED Public Television.

Rick has led ecotourism expeditions to the Galapagos and coral reef ecosystems throughout the Indo-Pacific and the Caribbean Basin. Rick holds a B.S. in marine biology from Roger Williams University in Rhode Island and studied evolutionary theory and the history & philosophy of science at Harvard University.
