What I do
I study advanced solar cell designs (photovoltaics) in the field of environmental technology. Specifically, I approach environmental materials science from the perspective of premediation and green chemistry: a goal to develop technologies and alternative energy systems (e.g. solar cells) that exhibit less of an impact (or footprint) on the environment for the post-fossil fuel economy. The materials I work with are nanoparticulate colloidal systems (particulates in solid/liquid suspension, and as microreactors in a liquid/gas aerosol suspension) and electrodeposited, nanostructured thin films. I use X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and microscopy techniques such as High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force micrscopy (AFM) to characterize the morphologies, crystalline structures and interfaces of my materials. When assembled as thin films, I characterize the photoelectrochemical properties of my materials using transmission/reflection UV/Vis spectrometry, cyclic voltammetry, and photocurrent measurements.

Interests
When I’m not obsessing about materials science and research, I’m usually hooked into my iPod. I love my music: the good, the bad, and the ugly. I will go from Zappa to Nina Simone to Black Flag to Mika to Silly Wizard to Roxy Music and Téléphone (and then back to Frank, of course). If it’s not music, I must be listening to ABC Radio or the Diane Rehm Show. And when I’m feeling perky, I listen to conversational French to improve my horrible vocabulary and grammar.

Projects
I have been working on a public wiki called Advanced Photovoltaics that deals with thin film PV and third generation PV technologies.
My goal is to develop an international community involved in photovoltaic research and environmental technology.
Interested parties can send me their pbwiki account name and I will pass along the editing unlock.
