What I do
My project involves characterizing the chemosensing systems in Azospirillum brasilense, a nitrogen-fixing soil bacterium that colonizes the roots of cereals including wheat and rice. Chemotaxis in Azospirillum is rather complex compared to the model organism Escherichia coli. A. brasilense contains four chemotaxis operons and over thirty putative methyl accepting chemotaxis proteins (MCPs). There is evidence of cross talk between adaptation proteins encoded within different che operons. It is my goal to characterize these MCPs and elucidate the cross-talk of adaptation proteins.
