What I do
I am a biologist with a position as an Associate Professor at the University of Chile in Santiago. I have been working for ten years on zebrafish developmental biology and molecular genetics. I am also part of a wider group of scientists funded by the Millennium Science Initiative, the Center for Genomics of the Cell, CGC of which I am Scientific Director. I am also President of the Chilean Society for Cell Biology (term 2007-2008).

Interests
In my lab, we are interested in development of neural cells during embryogenesis. In recent years, we have focused on mechanosensory cells in the zebrafish as a model to understand the genetic basis of their development. We are working at present towards dissecting the molecular mechanisms involved in hair cell regeneration. Other projects include immune system development in fish, cell migration, effect of environmental contaminants on fish, biomedical applications of zebrafish and genomic analysis of salmonids.
