Interests
My research activity ranges from complex liquids and water to soft matter and biologic systems, to nanoscopic systems and magnetic materials, to disordered systems and percolation.
Projects
My recent work focuses on studying the properties of molecular liquids, such as water and silica (two of the most common substances on the Earth). These liquids have anomalies, such as the maximum of density of water at 4 Celsius, that make them “special” with respect to other liquids.
I am developing a theoretical approach to show that their anomalies have as a consequence the coexistence of two liquid phases at very low temperature. Surprisingly, I showed the possibility of a liquid-liquid phase transition in systems without anomalous density behavior, a result possibly relevant in quite different systems, such as protein solutions, colloids, or liquid metals. Possible applications of this discovery go from the improvement of the protein crystallization process (essential for protein analysis), to the development of new self-assembly nanoscopic particles, to a better use of liquid metals in the cooling systems of nuclear plants.
Recently, my interests extended to develop a method for large-scale analysis for biologic networks.
