Matthew Smith's profile
What I do
I am a researcher in the lab of Dr. John Chaput at the Biodesign Institute at Arizona State University.
I think that we are entering a new era in scientific publishing and collaboration. I recently coauthored a report in PLoS ONE, a new journal with a very compelling publishing model. I have also begun to contribute to OpenWetWare, a wiki for researchers in biology and biological engineering. There seem to be more and more examples of creative and novel uses of technology and the web being used to accelerate the pace of scientific research, and I am enthusiastic for a future shaped by these innovations.

Interests
I am perhaps the very most interested in questions of the early origins of replicators. The variety and complexity of life we see today as well as in the fossil record is understandable as the product of evolution. However, the way in which the first replicator came to be is still an open question, and one that I am very interested in studying.
I am also very interested in the understanding of biological macromolecules in terms of information content. My past and present work performing in vitro evolution experiments has led me to related questions about the sequence-structure-function landscape.
