George Vernikos' profile
What I do
The aim of my PhD research project is the in silico prediction of Genomic Islands (GIs) in microbial genomes using Compositional, Structural and Comparative-based analysis. I am particularly interested in studying the structural variation of GIs aiming to build a structural model that will reliably describe both the backbone as well as the accessory structural features of those elements. Moreover the effects of the amelioration on the compositional signature of GIs, is a major concern of my project with the aim of studying the evolution of microbes through Horizontal Gene Transfer (HGT) mechanisms over time.
I am a 3rd year PhD student under the supervision of Julian Parkhill, in Team 84 of Comparative Genomics at The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute.
My College is Selwyn College, University of Cambridge.
