What I do
I teach courses on clear writing in Science to Science graduate and undergraduate students. These courses are designed to help researchers write papers that are clear and persuasive.
First students learn to identify the causes of confused scientific writing, misconceptions about the rules that govern scientific writing, and a researcher’s responsibility to write clearly.
The course then focuses on 1) how to transform complex and convoluted ideas into direct and precise ones; 2) how to overcome the hallmarks of confused writing – overuse of jargon, abbreviations, specialized terminology, the passive voice, weak linking verbs, nominalizations, and prepositional phrases; and 3) editing techniques and principles of style, enabling them to communicate their research to a multi-disciplinary audience.- Blog:

Interests
I am interested in and committed to improving the way scientists write about their research. I believe that there is a deep need for researchers to learn how to write for multi-disciplinary audiences, for the non-specialist reader. I also know that it’s possible to teach scientists to write clearly and precisely.
