Piero Visconti's profile
What I do
I am currently a visiting scholar at the Ecology Centre of the University of Queensland, Australia. I am going to start a PhD at the ARC Centre for Coral Reef Studies, James Cook University in Townsville, Australia. I work in conservation biology, whose aim is producing science of potential advice for who fights to halt (better said slow down) the sixth mass extinction…

Interests
Sciencewise I am interested in species distribution modelling, optimization algorithms and decision support systems.
In the private life I am a birdwatching enthusiast, if I am not working you would probably find me with a binocular out for a walk in the bush. I also love playing tennis and sailing. Lately I am getting interested in international and italian politics (as a spectator only!). I am planning to learn an instrument ( trumpet or saxophone??) and take a diving course…
Projects
I am currently working on dynamic conservation planning for the persistence of multiple species. I am developing a new framework to solve the “scheduling problem”. That is: how do you decide now how will you allocate conservation efforts in the future given a system of dynamic biodiversity features and human induced threats to get the biggest persistence bang for your conservation buck?An exciting question indeed!
