Robert Carlson's profile

What I do

At the desk: I’m best known for my analysis of biological technologies and writing about the future of biology.

At the bench: I develop new quantitative assays for biological applications, and also new microfabrication techniques for building devices around those assays.

Interests

At the broadest level, I’m interested in the future role of biology as a human technology. Other interests include fuel cells, industrial ecology, and industrial design. I am currently working on microfluidic devices to quantify properties of single cells, and on new fabrication techniques to produce those devices.

Projects

I’m a Principal at Biodesic, LLC. Among other projects, we develop new quantitative assays that are used in diagnostics and, more generally, as engineering tools for biological systems.

I’m also a Senior Associate at Bio Economic Research Associates, where I mostly do 1) strategy, and 2) analysis of new technologies and how they fit into the future of living systems.

I help organize Science on Tap , a Science Cafe in Seattle, WA.

My blog is at synthesis.typepad.com .
