I cannot help it, these things always dazzle me (a bit)…

      • Wroughton, Wiltshire, UK (close to Barbury Castle)
      • Reported June 1st, 2008 (yeah, I’m slow, it just came in the Belgian newspaper today)
      • Diameter: 100 m
      • and apparently a coded image representing the first 10 digits of pi.

But why it dazzles me…, I don’t know. In the end it are just some lads having fun.

Maybe we should try to trample the Nature Network logo into some fields.

He is. We work in the same office, so I should know. His little picture icon thingy gives you the impression that he’s a regular anthropha guy, but that’s just a cover that unzips to reveal…

The wonders of modern communication. I live about 5 miles from Barbury Castle, and I’d never heard of this crop circle, whereas there it is, flaunted in Belgium!

Some lads have very peculiar ideas of fun. Really people. Pi in crop circles? It’s neat and all, but…

I think Matt’s “picture icon thingy” is definitely weird. Yet when you see and talk to him, he’s a regular guy.
          Strange……

          Pi?!? Pi?!?

Clearly, it’s a coiled rattlesnake, sticking out its tongue. They do like to hide in the tall grass.

@ Kristi: Like your rattlesnake, but must admit I don’t see the tongue… and recon that it would be an extremely big-headed snake (this is artist freedom of course).

          Pi?!? Pi?!?

Well, if you start in the center and proceed outwards you see 10 circle segments (of different circles). The first segment is *3*×36°, then you have a dot, the second segment is *1*×36°, the third *4*×36°, 1(×36°), 5, 9, … and after the ten segments there are three dots… (or rattles, of course)

          (if not clear check this).

I believe you, regarding the maths…I’m a biologist, so I’ll always see animals and plants, rather than appreciating any embedded elegant mathematics.

The head of the rattlesnake is seen in profile at the center, and it’s admittedly rather cartoonish (like Kaa in the animated Jungle Books). The tongue is a bit thick, but hey, a coiled rattlesnake is the pattern my brain chose to extract from the photo.

Yes, Matt, I think you need to tell us something. I always knew that pic of you in your NN profile was hiding something, er, other-worldly!
Some people would do anything for a bit of publicity – but at least it is all in a good cause.
