When I was an undergrad I once asked my dentist his view on one of the most basic of questions in evolutionary anthropology: that impacted wisdom teeth are the result of skull evolution over the last ~1 million years. He had no idea what I was talking about. I sort of want my doctors to be more knowledgable about the breadth of their field, so I’m glad that the US allocates them DDS. However, I was definitely amused when the Intelligent Design advocacy group the Discovery Institute touted a 264 member strong anti-evolution outfit calling themselves Physicians and Surgeons for Scientific Integrity. The highest number of professionals in the group were all dentists!
