What I do
I used to work in a neurotoxicology laboratory at the University of Southern Maine studying the effects of arsenic on nerve cells in culture. To support my graduate studies I taught high school biology classes as a fellow of the Maine ScienceCorps outreach program. However, I’m currently an Environment volunteer with the U.S. Peace Corps posted in Ghana, West Africa, and so am taking some time away from the research environment.

Interests
I am interested in the effects that environmental heavy metal exposure, both naturally occurring and anthropogenic, can have on the development of the nervous system. However, I’m becoming more broadly interested in the creative application of science and technology to the challenges facing our world. So far, my Peace Corps experiences have taught me a lot about, and fired my interests in, agroforestry and the use of tree species to address environmental and social challenges.
Projects
Determining the effects of heavy metals on the morphological and cytoskeletal properties of nerve cells. Developing research projects for high school classrooms to conduct in collaboration with our university. Tropical agroforestry in West Africa.
