• Scott's miscellanies by Scott Keir

I think this is going to be a fairly varied collection of posts on stuff to do with art, science, culture, geekery and science communication. But we'll see, eh? And, just to be clear, what I type here is my own opinion, not my employers'.

    • Move over BarCamp, it's time for CupcakeCamp...

Eva kindly alerted me to this post from one of her friends about CupcakeCamp.

Yes, you heard that right. CupcakeCamp.

      As the website puts it,

Cupcake Camp is the greatest un-conference of them all! It originated in San Francisco and is based on a BarCamp / DemoCamp, which is a participant generated social web event for designers, developers, etc. The participants sign up to demo software they’ve been working on, or give awe-inspiring presentations. As exciting as this is, remove the software demos / inspiring presentations and replace them with cupcakes and you’ve got sheer brilliance!

So, a bit of a cheat in the sense of it being a cupcake show and tell event, but still, who wouldn’t want to go to that?

Eva’s friend, Andrea, won one of the prizes on offer with an unusual black sesame recipe which I would like to try (though without cream cheese, as that makes me ill).

As Andrea says, it’s scary having 400 people swarm at you for cupcakes, just look at them go:

I want one of these in the UK.

So, can we have this at the next Nature SciBlog conference?

More seriously, isn’t it great how ideas, models and concepts can transfer from fields and disciplines to completely unrelated ones, with the greatest of ease?

The black sesame cupcake recipe looks very interesting … I’d like to try it, but I’m not sure I can obtain all the ingredients here. No problems with the matcha-cream cheese frosting for me; I’m one of those lactase-persistent mutants.

Odd coincidences of language. I have lots of people in other feeds talking about cupcakes two. But as the name of a software update for the Android G1. Users want all the new features, and were getting excited at the news of an upcoming software update this month. They’re going to be disappointed when they find that they are not getting a whole cupcake. New filling, but no icing.

Incidentally the developers at google currently have two branches – Cupcake and Donut, I guess that health food isn’t really on the minds of software developers.

Thanks Sean! Though I think I prefer this cupcake, to a google one.
And I don’t just say that as an iPhone user :)
