• Scott's miscellanies by Scott Keir

I think this is going to be a fairly varied collection of posts on stuff to do with art, science, culture, geekery and science communication. But we'll see, eh? And, just to be clear, what I type here is my own opinion, not my employers'.

    • Torso of the year goes to a physics masters graduate

      Saturday, 20 Dec 2008 - 16:23 UTC

(Appropriately enough, I’m typing this in a box marked ‘body’)

I’m sure Jenny all will be delighted to hear that, in spite of research to the contrary, scientists can be sexy.

Or at least, one physics masters graduate has won Heat magazine’s Torso of the Year 2008. BBC News is there with all the details of course – though it seems he was not uncovered (sorry) in a physics lab, but in the office of a magazine for the social housing sector.

Still, we can claim him as one of our own, eh?

And it’s a very nice torso, too. I’m sure his mother’s proud.

I don’t think I’ve ever been involved with a man who had a torso. There was just that functional bit between the neck and, the, well, other functional bit.

I’m not sure, Richard, but you have 10 months to crunch those abs until I come after you with a camera and a copy of Heat.

Blegh, muscles. Not sexy. It just says “I have nothing better to do with my life than spend all my spare time working out – look at meeee”. Some women actually find that unattractive. Well, one, at least.

You can build up some pretty big muscles pippetting or typing, Eva. Just look at Richard, or me. Thumbs of steel.

Steffi – are physicists taken seriously to begin with?

Ah, Steffi, (link that works for the rest of us) – if you notice the mouseover comment you’ll see that the CS graduates might be ahead of the game.

Interesting…does this mean you’re over the ‘bored of blogging’ fit from August’s conference?

I was never really bored of blogging. Well, no, that’s not true. I do find the typing of a blog boring sometimes.

But I suggested the bored of blogging session for two reasons: firstly, to allow some discussion at the conference about the “bad side” of blogging – everything at the meeting had been very positive (which is a good thing), but I got the feeling that we should look positively at how to overcome the negative aspects of blogging. Secondly, I thought a session where everyone got the chance to speak would be a pleasant change from the other formats at the conference.

I have taken a break from blogging for the past few months, for a variety of reasons including that I have been busy, and have been typing too much. But I think I will be occasionally back. Thanks for noticing! :)

Scott – I did enjoy the bored of blogging session a great deal at the conference and am glad you’re going to be occasionally back! I’m also glad I’m not the only one who gets bored of typing…
