Or perhaps it’s flashing of camera bulbs as one of the world’s most famous science bloggers and media luvvies pop stars comes to stay.
It’s hard being famous
Yes, the incomparable Eva Amsen is here, full of gems such as ‘This place looks like Holland’ and ’Mine’s a pint’. She’s actually staying at my place, along with the giant tomato plants, sickly runner beans, killer lettuce (don’t ask), slug graveyard and over-sized marrows (no, really: don’t ask).

I can be this rude about her because she has just collapsed from jetlaggedness and is (hopefully) asleep in the Elder pawn’s bed. I haven’t given her my wireless password so she won’t be able to do anything about this post till the morning. (The Elder Pawn is camping with her aunt in Woolacombe, so don’t worry that Eva is turfing children out onto the street.)
Tomorrow evening we shall go and be Frivolously Fringed; on Saturday there’s Science Online. If you want an appointment with her, then let me know (ten quid should do it). Sorry Matt, she’s not coming on the pub crawl ‘cos she can’t hold her liquor.
On Sunday we’ll go see the marshes of London.

If you click through you can see where it is on the flickr map, and it’s about 2.5-3 hours’ drive from where I live, up in the ancestral lands.
(It’s an allotment, btw).
We came back with half a hundredweight of taters; carrots; beetroot; and the free world’s supply of green beans. My mum’s just had a back operation and can’t harvest the stuff quickly enough, and certainly not the potatoes Sophie and I helped her plant back in April.

As a result of extreme heat, my little vegetable garden looks like crap this year, so I have to live vicariously through the garden pics (and picks) of others. Only the eggplants survived and produced. :-(
Oh noes! I shall take photos of ripening tomatoes and cute little chilli plants forthwith!
I see this morning that there are three sad little yellow pear tomatoes that will be ready this weekend, but that’s hardly enough for a proper ratatouille or vegetarian lasagna (which is what I do with the eggplant, typically).
Maybe I’ll just have to settle for spicy eggplant with rice, or roasted eggplant pasta salad.

If you can get them across the Atlantic, I’ll take some green beans. This has not been the greatest summer for veggies here.
Tomato plants here in Tornado Alley have been miserable this summer – not enough sun in June and July I guess.
That set of storms was a bit terrifying – I drove through part of it on the way home last night. Houses just round the corner from us had bits of their roofs torn off, street signs were bent at 90 degrees, and the rain water was sloshing up in the wheel wells at the local roundabout. A friend one street over told me she saw a tire fly by her window, just before shepherding her family into the basement.
Our street seems to have been largely unaffected, although there were a few bits of roofing shingle on the front lawn. A roof inspection is in order, I think.

I am jealous of the garden Richard and the bounty it seems to be providing! Every juicy tomato or succulent melon my garden has produced has been snatched away from me just days before I planned on harvesting by some thieving raccoons who leave the half-finished bits on the deck to add insult to injury.
Raccoons are teh evil. But even they aren’t bothering with the pathetic excuse for tomatoes we have this year.

My sister once got woken up at 4am, with a severe jetlag/hangover combination, by a raccoon eating figs from my tree right outside her open window. The nibbling noises freaked her right out, and she let out a very impressive shriek!
