I was very surprised this morning when I checked my mail. A good few months ago I subscribed to a new journal, not realizing that the first edition was so long off.

There it is, centre stage on my desk, the first edition of Nature Chemistry. As I’ve been frantically busy all day, I’ve only had a chance to flick through it. I was going to bring it home tonight to peruse but frankly, after a day high powered science, I need a break from hardcore chemistry. Superficial details only then, its purple. It is my favorite shade of purple. The headers are gloriously purple inside and the cover very decorative there on my desk. Note that this image was taken around 9.30 am this morning. As I left my office, my desk looked like a paper hurricane had struck, covered in lab scripts, module proposals, textbooks and drafts of goodness only knows what that I was supposed to do last week.
Apart from Nature Chemistry, the salient details of my desk include a pot of jelly (strawberry flavored), a mug (’I’d rather be with Daniel Craig’, its my long meeting mug – yes I am counting the minutes until I can get my hands on Quantum of Solace DVD), some RSC rock in the pencil pot and my trusty work laptop. As Henry gets to post his wearable office, I thought it only fair that I should get to post my not so wearable, but currently student-free office!
I’m totally fine with judging things by the colour of the cover and purple is my favourite colour, so Nature Chemistry is making a pretty good first impression!
My thesis is bound in purple!
I thought about doing that, but then went with the red for reasons as described. Red is my second favourite colour, so it all worked out!
Great news – I’m not the only one who thought QoS was a good film! Mark Kermode panned it but what does he know?
Stephen – do you like Daniel Craig too?
Yeah, I liked the movie. I wasn’t a great Bond fan until the blond bond, but now I like it. Casino Royale is a regular feature on movie nights!
Haven’t seen the movie yet, (I know, I know!), but purple rocks, so that’s cool :)
I’m so tired, I’m popping round NN leaving non sequiturs all over the place…
Aren’t most conversations on NN filled with non sequiturs ?
Not that I want to divert your thread into popular culture (people will start to say that’s all I’m interested in!) but I do like Craig’s Bond – he has finally succeeded in making him an interesting character. I confess I’ve not seen much else of his work that stands out in my mind, apart from Layer Cake which was brutally good.
Yeah, Layer Cake was great.
Oh yes. I saw QoS on the plane over from Oz to NZ (barely—my seat-back set needed rebooting 20 mins into the flight, which didn’t leave a great deal of time to watch a movie), and I’ve decided that Craig is superb. Even if some of the plot was a bit ‘huh?’. Layer Cake is brilliant, with one of those endings that stands out in the mind for a long time.
When I am old, I shall wear
DeepPurple.I’m jealous Katherine. We’d like to subscribe to Nat Chem but can’t justify the cost for our small number of chemists. I’m waiting to see how it makes out in the next few months.
I took out a personal subscription. There is something nice about sitting down with a hard copy journal and a cup of tea and browsing through the articles. I used to get Dalton Transactions, but wanted something more general.
I can actually see some surface of your desk. I am quite envious of your ability to be organized. Enjoy your reading!
Ah, well, there are a number of reasons for the organization, the most obvious one being that I have two desks in my office.

Slightly more disorganized today, but you can barely see the other desk.
Re Daniel Craig movies: I’ve never seen Layer Cake, worth watching?
Definitely! It’s pretty violent in places, but I really enjoyed it.
We’re going to see the Watchmen this weekend, can’t wait!
