On the show this week, gene therapy to correct colour blindness, weird bouncing behaviour from droplets, how warmer temperatures in the past affected the Greenland ice sheet, and how evolving sex chromosomes helped animals carve out new niches

Monday 21st September, 11am: The Nature Debate: Science and the Financial Crisis
      COST: £5/$8 in advance
      DETAILS AND REGISTRATION HERE
The 1980s saw the rise of the ‘rocket scientists’ of finance – as engineers, mathematicians and physicists rejected careers in science and technology and instead opted to work for banks. What part did they play in the financial crisis? And what is the future of science in finance? Join leading experts from science and banking as they debate whether the crisis was the result of bankers and regulators failing to grasp complicated, expert knowledge; and whether scientific knowledge – in particular fields such as complex systems, ecological economics and human behaviour – could help to ensure that economies are better understood and better regulated.

Thursday 24th September, 10am: The SkyLabs Workshop
Advanced scripting workshop by Eightball Magic. Eightball will be walking us through some examples of different scripts following on from Hiro’s basic scripting classes.

Thursday 24th September, 11am: The Nature Podcast
      Topics TBC

Friday 25th September, 1:30am-9:30am: The Source Event – careers for scientists.
      COST: £15/$25 in advance
      DETAILS AND REGISTRATION HERE
The Source Event is one day science career fair on a career in science, be it in industrial research, research organisations or academia. It will present the best opportunities from the best organisations: public, private, national and international.

Part of the speaker programme will be live streamed by Nature Publishing Group into Second Life. We will be broadcasting the postdoctoral stream; however the topics are of very broad interest to all stages of scientist and include How to Get Published, Women in Science and Careers in Industry. Please see the website for all the sessions.

Tuesday 29th September, 10am: Carlos Calle, NASA
Carlos Calle is the founder and lead of NASA’s Electrostatics and Surface Physics Laboratory at the Kennedy Space Center. He received his Ph.D in theoretical nuclear physics from Ohio University. Dr. Calle is currently working on the problem of electrostatic phenomena on planetary surfaces, particularly on Mars and the Moon, developing instrumentation for future planetary exploration missions. Calle will be talking about his new book, The Universe, in which he lays out the cosmological models based on M-theory, which suggest that our particular universe may be one of an unimaginable number of universes, each with its own set of physical laws. According to one of the most promising models, the big bang may not be the moment of creation but the bridge to a past filled with endless cycles of universe creation and destruction.
