• Event: Personal Genomics and 23andMe

      Friday, 07 Aug 2009 - 23:03 UTC

The next event in our regular series of events on Tuesdays in Second Life will be a presentation and discussion with Chia Hwu and Brian Naughton from personal genomics company 23andMe.

23andMe has become famous as the DNA testing start-up which you can post your saliva to and receive a personal analysis, including risk factors for 116 diseases including breast cancer and Type 2 Diabetes and information on your ancestral path.

Chia is Community Manager and Brian is Founding Scientist for 23andMe and together they will discuss what they can tell you from your genes, how the analysis is done and how their new research arm 23andWe hopes to contribute to genetic research.

Chia and Brian will be Nature Publishing Group’s guests in Second Life on Tuesday 11th August at 10am PDT where they will give a short presentation and take questions from the audience on all aspects of 23andMe and the field of personal genomics. All very welcome!

I’ll have to remember not to schedule meetings on Tuesday afternoons…this sounds like a very interesting topic. Any chance of a replay or archived video?

Sounds interesting, but why do we need yet another virtual networking site to sign up for? Can’t they just have a regular webinar?

Actually, after I finally gave it a try, Second Life is a lot of fun. It’s more of a virtual world than a networking site. It can be a huge time-sucker, though.

Yes, that’s what I’m afraid of. I already disabled my Facebook account for that reason (actually, mainly because the noisy, fussy interface was driving me nuts).
