• Why Second Life Sucks and Rocks for Meetings

Not my title, but the title of a pair of posts from Nick Wilson at Clever Zebra.

The posts are well worth reading, especially for those thinking about dipping a toe in the SL meeting water, so I won’t go into a lot of detail here, but the basics of Nick’s arguments seem to be very common experiences. The good: it’s much cheaper than regular meetings and the environment is really only limited by imagination. He mentions advanced 3D decision making tools as an example of something simply not possible in other environments. The bad: Second Life is prone to technical difficulties and there’s nothing the organiser can do about them. The user interface also leaves something to be desired – he describes trying to move his avatar as like walking through treacle, which is a pretty common occurrence when an area is very busy.

Anyway, Nick’s articles are definitely worth a look and in the meantime I have been inspired to write my own article on what we have found works and doesn’t at our events. Watch this space!
