• Climate Change Series - Euan Nisbet: The Report

      Friday, 14 Dec 2007 - 14:22 UTC

On Thursday, Euan Nisbet came to give the second in our series of climate change events on Second Nature. Euan is a Professor of Geology at Royal Holloway University, and talked to us about the need for accurate monitoring of the climate, greenhouse gases, top producers and the like – how can we ever hope to tackle global warming if we don’t have an accurate picture of what the problem is, and where it’s coming from?

You can read Euan’s commentary in last week’s Nature on the topic, and you can also listen to his talk, the Q&A session that followed and view his slides below.

Thanks again to Euan for coming and providing some fascinating food for thought – any feedback for him or us, drop me a line at j.scott@nature.com.

Jo is away today, so I am noting on her behalf that the BBC World Service is featuring this conference on its Digital Planet website, together with a podcast about it by Timo Hannay, director of web publishing at Nature. The podcast is available for one week from today, which means you can listen to it any time between now and Christmas day by visiting this link at the BBC site.

          Thanks Maxine,

Yes, I have listened to parts of the podcast.

Well done Nature for getting coverage on Beeb’s World Service, most impressive =)

Personally, I don’t hang about on Second Life that much and it was only recently that I became aware that people were using it to host and attend conferences.

Brilliant idea I have to say and as Timo said in the podcast, this is not to replace but to complement traditional style conferences.

The first one that I was aware of was hosted by John Wilbanks at Science Commons about six months ago. There was then another one in October that one of my ScienceBlogs contacts brought to my attention.

I was unable to attend both namely as I don’t think my Boss at work would be too chuffed if he found me surfing non work related sites during working hours.

Well done to those who host and attend such events and I am highly confident that there is A LOT of scope for growth in these areas, regardless of the topics under discussion. As users of Second Life know, the sky is quite literally the limit.

I’m flying off to Second Nature….

          Wooosh,

          Graham
