    • Six State Science Survey: Part 4 - Louisville

Most residents of Louisville, Kentucky probably don’t worry too much about hurricanes, but on the day I visited Kentucky’s largest city, it was the first thing on everyone’s mind. Hurricane Ike downed tree limbs and cut power in cities throughout the midwest from Louisville to Columbus to Pittsburgh, and recovery was a slow and painstaking process.

I braved the power-less stoplights long enough to check out two of Louisville’s famous sports venues: Churchill Downs and Valhalla Country Club.

The iconic spires of Churchill Downs, home of the Kentucky Derby.

I visited Valhalla on Sunday morning, as the U.S. team prepared to defeat Europe in the Ryder Cup. Sadly, though predictably, I wasn’t able to get too far and ended up with a blurry photo of the grounds .

As for the Courier-Journal, the trend continues with virtually no science-related material. The paper, which reaches 218,796 people each day as the nation’s 41st largest paper, barely squeaked onto the scoreboard with a vaguely science-related article about GM’s new electric car, the Volt. Talking points discussed the different types of fuel it can use and the charging system, incorporating big words such as “E85 ethanol” and “kilowatt-hour.” This comes in the Business section, a 4-page part that literally could not be any smaller.
