After giving a big presentation to the Chancellor’s Research Council, someone approaches you to comment…

“There’s something I have to say about your presentation.”

      “Oh, yes? Please, go ahead.”

“Well, when you get animated, your accent gets much…thicker.”

      “Oh, gosh, sorry!”

“No, it’s really sexy. Does it happen everytime you get excited?”

Indeed, and there’s already a link to this podcast on NN where you can listen to the “really sexy” Richard P Grant. Judge for yourselves !!

I was chatting away with a colleague at a conference in the US last year and noticed an older female academic hovering nearby – thinking she wanted to speak to us, we turned to her “Oh no, please carry on – British accents are hot!” was the reply!

Ah well, anything for career enhancement as they say…

The re-run of Saturday Night Live had Hugh Laurie as host, last night. The first skit was the “sexy British accent” schtick. And I must admit, it has stood me in good stead the last few years… he he heee… the stories I could tell… of course, being the drummer in a rock band helped too…

There was a snippet/interview of me on the BBC, but I think that’s long gone. I was surprised at how thick my accent was (to me: I imagine to a Brit it sounds odd and Americanized by now…Jenny?). I was also very surprised at how deep my voice was.

Usually I try and maintain a decent neutral BBC accent over here, but I guess it slips back saaf to me ‘ome tahn when Im exci’ed >:) Men’al Glo’’al stops too.

@Jenny: I’ll send a picture of me in tie. That’ll get you reeling…

I have a few thoughts in my head, but I think the most constructive one is as follows.

Since Brooksie can’t lay his hands on this BBC snippet, who’s up for participating in the first NN podcast later this year? This is very much just an idea, I hasten to add, but I think, it has milage.

Whilst there were some technical glitches in the podcast I posted a link to above involving myself, Richard, David Wallace and Mike Sefang, we did the recording live using Skype and without going into detail, David did a cracking job at editing and uploading it only a few hours after the recording.

One of the best unplanned things that came out of that discussion was a podcast of the Final Panel Discussion of Science Blogging 2008: London which went out a few hours after the event.

For the record, permission to do so was saught and received from NPG beforehand.

So, in order to nail down the now burning issue of how very sexy Brooksie purportedly sounds (when excited), this would of course require his involvement.

I’ll bring this issue (NN podcast) up in person at CISB’09 next weekend.

          Thoughts please, folks.

The Gee, as you know, has an accent similar to that of a 1930s BBC newsreader. Some years ago I was in a diner near Austin, Texas, with two Texans of similar magnificent dimensions to my own. We were talking about the propect of digging some dead cows out of a gully on a ranch (long story) when the waitress came up to take our order and said to me (and I swear I am not making this up)

“Gee, ah jahst lurrvvvve yore li’l ol’ accent, y’all”

The gal even knew my name.

hahaha :) I have to say that the accent indeed is a British one with a tad bit of “American” now and then. Of course, when you talk to a “proper British person” (or sometimes those Scottish ones) you sound more and more British.

then again, I might not be the best judge on how much it changes considering my own accent evolution (devolution??) in the US ;)
