I know some people who are so fed up with life in the UK that they are thinking of going back to their country of origin – Zimbabwe.

Now, whereas my friends’ concerns are presumably more personal than strictly political, it’s hard to think of a more austere judgement on the way the UK is going. In an interview in a Spanish newspaper today – also published in the Daily Torygraph, Dame Stella Rimington, former head of MI5, says that the government is using the threat of terror to restrict civil liberties. We’re seeing this in all sorts of ways, large and small, from a snarky ban on kissing on a railway station platform (HT Nick Booth), to the creeping threat of identity cards (which Dame Stella says are “totally useless”); the heavy-handed arrests of elected members of the political opposition, and – and this should be of concern to those of us who live in cyberspace – the government’s current plans to snoop on electronic communications traffic.

I predict that the time for a general election will come and go without one being held, as the government will find one way or another – some emergency legislation perhaps – to ensure that they stay in power indefinitely. Perhaps Mr Mugabe would like to swap places with my Zimbabwean friends? If things continue the way they are, he might find the UK to be just like home.

I can hear the Home Secretary’s boots quaking from here, given that she’s probably read your comment even before I got to it.
