    • A Clerihew on Lazzaro Spallanzani

      LAZZARO SPALLANZANI
Probably never ate chili con carne
He’s remembered for his elegant experimental verification
Of the once-popular theory of preformation.

      Envoi
Spallanzani was born on 10 January 1729 and died on 27 Feb 1799, so this year – and almost in the same month – we celebrate the 280th anniversary of his birth and the 210th of his death. Anyway, makes change from Darwin. I’m so Darwinned out that I think my head might explode.

          Hi Henry,

Glad to see you’re still rhyming! Just saw this and thought of you. http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?id=john-updike-poem-1969&SID=mail&sc=emailfriend

Thanks Clare – it’s a fabulous scientific poem! (I’ve pasted in your link here). All the stanzas are in perfect Spenserian form (eight lines of pentameter with a ninth in hexameter), except the first, which is a seven-line Rhyme Royal. There. Just thought you ought to know that.
