    It's a blog. I don't really know what it's about either.

    • Yes we can...?

What a horrible selfish thing to break a blog break for, but I wanted to let you know, (in a winking, insinuating manner) that two of my blog posts are up for voting at the 3quarksdaily science blog awards this week. There are a gazillion blog posts (give or take) but only the top 20 of the popular vote will go on to the next round.

My blog title is listed as “Nature Network” in the poll, but I’ve asked for it to be changed, so you can find my posts either under the letter N or E.
A Squishy Topic (with Squishy Cow!) and Last Saturday are the ones I submitted, because they are my favourites. I know they’re at least one other person’s favourite(s), because people-who-are-not-me have submitted both to Open Lab on other occasions, so please re-show your support!

Back to catching up with my life now. My parents are visiting next week, to watch me be spoken to in Latin while I’m wearing black robes, but after they’re gone I’ll resume the blog.

Very nice. Beware the Chancellor – when I got my PhD, she started chatting with me and wouldn’t let my hands go, as people stacked up behind me.

          Your mileage may vary. Enjoy!

What color is your sash? I hope it’s amenable to proper accessorizing. The UW’s were purple, which is a nightmare for shoes.

I have no clue… And I don’t even know where to find out. Judging by pictures on the internet, maybe red?

IIRC, U of T PhD hoods (not “sashes”, even though that’s what they look like, go figure) are red. A great improvement over the blue and-fuzzy-white undergraduate BSc ones.

Eva – will you be resuming the blog in Latin, or have I misunderstood? ;-)

I managed to escape my PhD graduation by moving to Canada; I highly recommend this maneuveur having sat through a video broadcast of my ex-boyfriend’s 2 hour Latin ceremony in Glasgow.

A lot of people don’t do it for their PhD, and I could have graduated in March (sans ceremony) but in Holland you never get a graduation ceremony except for your PhD degree, and because I did all my other degrees there, I never had one! So this is my only chance. I don’t know if my sister is going for a PhD (she is just finishing her masters – and should be writing a blog post for me about her field, by the way…) so this might also be the only chance for my parents to see one of their children in an academic gown!

I went to my PhD graduation for my parents’ sake, and ended up glad I did so — for my own sake. In many ways it’s a crappy school but Uni Qld does graduations right, with censers and gowns and latin readings and lots of pomp and ceremony. It gave me a sense of closure that I hadn’t expected to feel so strongly, or appreciate so much.

I went to mine, which was long and boring, just to have the honour of what was described as a very exclusive degree, the highest academic honour of the University, etc. etc. etc. Just me and 700 of my closest, dearest, academic peers. What a way to feel special.

But I’m glad I went. Sir Martin Rees said something or other about the cosmos and being successful, or whatever, and as I noted above the Chancellor wouldn’t let me off the stage (for a while). I remember very little else of it though.

Squishy cow is at the 25th place, dropped from 22nd, and is not going to even make it to the judging round (only the top 20 on June 8 will go through) because (almost) none of you are voting for her. This makes Squishy sad =(
(See this post for voting info)

Squishy is currently in 17th place, but it’s all very close, so she’d still like your support!
