I was amused to discover that a colleague, Sally Temple, did not answer an e-mail I just sent her certainly in part because of having to produce the following little video for the MacArthur Foundation (not all worthies are concentrated in Boston).

(This is my opportunity to learn how to embed video and use the recommended tags.)

These little couple-minute blurbs take sometimes a couple days or more of filming, as I’ve seen in the Paris lab, which is why I admired Stephen Curry’s recent effort so much. Not to mention that he carried out all the filming and editing himself.

Maybe she’s not talking to you anymore, now that she’s a genius..?

With regard to the video, well, Speilberg cried off so what can you do?

Fascinating video! Thanks for this. Does the MacArthur foundation send a film crew to all the winners? Is there a repository of these videos somewhere?

I followed a link on Anna’s blog to find you here and am looking forward to reading more. As a grad student about to embark on a trans-Atlantic move to Paris to begin a post-doc, I’m very happy to see someone else blogging about science and cross-cultural perspectives in and out of the field. Just wanted to say hello!

Hi, Melissa! Lots more of us here than one might think at first glance – I just met last night an American postdoc who is working on (I think) symbiotic bacteria here in the Toulouse vicinity. Tons of North Americans in Paris – you’ll get the titillating aspect of being abroad without the complete culture deprivation that can sometimes happen.
