I am in retro geek heaven!

The BBC website tells me that Red Dwarf is returning for a two-part special over Easter.

Red Dwarf was the only programme that I absolutely HAD to watch (or video) every week. The neighbours’ kids probably have all kinds of traumatic memories of their babysitter yelling at them to turn off the cartoons NOW so she could tune in. My geekier friends and I spent much of our early teenage years discussing the relative merits of the episodes set on the Red Dwarf itself as opposed to the Starbug, and of the male versus the female Holly (I preferred the former in both cases, by the way). Not to mention the Emohawk and the Vindaloo Monster. I read the novels, I bought the videos, I watched (and taped) the BBC “making of” and outtakes specials.

Red Dwarf was also my gateway drug into the world of Douglas Adams, and for that I am eternally grateful.

I do hope that the new episodes are immediately available for fully authorised and legal purchase on the internet.

The Pawns love RD. They have the mock-Rimmer salute down to a ‘t’.

          What have we done?

Can’t get enthusiastic about it, sorry! Never ‘did’ RD. Struggle a bit with Douglas Adams too…not sure why. I’ll content myself with waiting in anticipation for the 4 Dr. Who specials and the eventual new Doctor.

You’ve ensured that your daughters will return to the UK with a full appreciation of the culture of their ancestral homeland, that’s what you’ve done. Good man.

Katherine, I got very evangelical about Hitchhiker when I first discovered the books, but quickly realised that a lot of people don’t like it at all. So I’ve stopped now. The Dr Who revival happened after I left the UK, so I’ve never got back into it – I did see the Christmas special this year and didn’t like it much, but then again I was shivering under a blanket with a norovirus attack, so might not have been in the best of mood.

p.s. anyone who doesn’t like Red Dwarf is a smeghead.

No, it just wasn’t very good.

I’ve never seen Red Dwarf, but none of you have knowledge of Dutch TV history (and I’ve even had to brush up on Canadian shows recently) so I don’t feel too stupid.

Eva, I’ll watch your choice of classic Dutch television (providing that a subtitled version is available) if you’ll watch an episode or two of Red Dwarf!
