• The O.L.S. Buzz by Christie Wilcox

A blog about anything and everything that piques the interest of a marine biologist, written for everyone else. Great for any Oompa Loompa of Science (O.L.S.) or the scientist in us all!

You could watch the necropsy of a Great White Shark.

The Auckland Museum plans to cut into the 10ft female who was accidentally caught by fishermen. The necropsy will be carried out by Clinton Duffy of the Department of Conservation Marine Conservation Section and Dr. Tom Trnski, Marine Curator of the Auckland Museum. The event, normally done in a lab hidden from prying eyes, will be done instead in full view of the public. Guests are encouraged to watch the operation, which is set for 11am-1pm on Jan 8th in the loading dock at the south-eastern corner of the Museum. But if you’re not in the area, don’t fear – the necropsy will be streamed live on the web, too.

The hope is that the public stunt will raise awareness about these feared killers of the sea, and show people what sharks really eat – here’s to hoping they don’t find any human bones in there.

Wait, hasn’t someone done something like this before?

          Yeah, that’s right, they did.

Sounds like an interesting idea for an event though. I’d be there if I lived close enough. I wonder if they’re insured against people fainting and hurting themselves?

I wish I could go see it live myself… I love watching necropsies. There’s something morbidly fascinating about them. And it might be interesting enough just to watch the people who show up for it…

          Cath: Lol.
