• Ethanoldham and alcoholdham? Make mine a double.

Splendid reporting from the BBC today. Some enterprising gentlemen in the great northern English mill town of Oldham had decided to counteract the downturn by cultivating enough cannabis to make a great many people high. Possibly feeling that Oldham could be improved by having a few of its residents blinded and poisoned by rashly distilled alcoholic drink, they also fabricated a vodka still. The fine Police of what I understand we must now call Greater Manchester have interrupted these efforts to make Oldham epidemiologically similar to Pskov and two gentlemen are even now assisting the police with their enquiries.

The BBC reported that “Hundreds of gallons of highly flammable liquids, including ethanol and alcohol, were found in containers around a large still by Greater Manchester Police. Up to 130 cannabis plants were also found at the property in Castle Hill.”

I would have thought that the only drug fit to share a room with illegally distilled vodka would be coke.

One of the local beers here is called Kokanee. I once ordered one at a bar with some very jetlagged English friends in tow – and they were both convinced that I’d asked for “some coke and an E”. For some reason they seemed more concerned with the potential effects of the drug combination than with the ability to purchase powerful stimulants in a normal-looking pub.

Dr Ennis, were you brain drained from England’s shores before Shameless appeared on television and “A pint of lager and two E’s Kev” entered the British lexicon?

Yes, I seem to have missed that.
