• One cannot help but smile at the thought of Conservative

      Tuesday, 18 Nov 2008 - 15:15 UTC

Members of Parliament sitting at desks learning the basics of science.

“What does hydrogen sulphide smell like, Mr Osborne?”
      “Farts, sir!” (all giggle)

Although a thorough-paced Whig myself I am delighted that a political party recognizes that scientific literacy is a crucial skill in this modern world, and is doing something to address the deficit in those who would be our rulers.

Unfortunately, a respect for science does not necessarily make one a great man. I hear that M. Robespierre was quite fond of the approach. But I presume that it must help, at least to some degree and in some cases, not least the modern politician, where there is certainly not a surfeit of knowledge of the topic.
