One of the most studied aspects of brains in evolutionary neuroscience is a rather coarse-grained property of it – namely, its size. Brains can increase in size, but brain regions can also increase.

In the series to come, we will discuss how brain regions increase in size during evolution. This will teach us a few general principles – mainly, the fundamental role that development has on the evolutionary history of brains.
