These are the Open Laboratory 2009 submissions so far. Some of you may have noticed that I’ve made a “condensed” version of the Elder Things posts; it was intended for submission. When voting begins (I shall warn you), you might as well kindly vote for this entry. But I also ask you something else: go there and read the entries submitted (yes, I know they surpass 300 entries, but c’mon!), and honestly choose the ones you like better; if, by any means, mine enters your picks, kudos for me. If not, at least you’re reading from the best science blogging in the intertubes!

Really really busy
- Date:

Sorry, y’all, for not writing for a looooooong time. Been busy with dissertation and all, and am also delving into the mysteries of bioinformatics. Guess I’ll soon fulfill my plan of becoming an evolutionary comparative ethopharmacological behavioral molecular neuroscientist, or something.
On a side note, I’m now Adjunct Professor of Pharmacology at my U.- tags:

continue reading this postWhat kind of evo neuroscience blog would this be if I didn’t blog on this?
Paleontologists found some fossils in Kansas which turned out to be actual fossilized brains, a extremely rare event in paleoneurology. Usually, paleoneurological data come from cranium endocasts, which are thought to be reasonable proxies for real brains. In this case, however, the whole brain from the extinct chimaeroid fish Sibyrhynchus denisoni, a cartilaginous fish closely related to sharks and ratfishes 1.

continue reading this postAll pieces are now assembled: we know a little bit about the modular nature of brain development, we know a little bit about heterochrony, and we know a little bit about correlated evolution. We can now try to lay down the theory of “late equals large”.

Late equals large, part IV: Modularity
- Date:

continue reading this postIn the last posts, we described how evolutionary biologists theorized about modularity, a process in which a system of traits goes through parcellation and/or integration in order to become an integrated set of co-evolving traits. Modularity is an interesting solution to the problem of integrated systems, because it allows on trait to undergo evolutionary change, whilst the rest of the system is kept stable.
