• Work Blog by Bronwen Dekker

I have returned from maternity leave, and will probably start out by blogging about work, as this seems All Very New again.

In general, I really enjoy my job: it is stimulating, I get to chat to interesting people, and the stress level is pretty minimal (let’s face it, no lives are in the balance). But there are times when I wonder what the point is.

…In a moment of anger I wrote in some detail what had upset me. A few kind words of caution (including Richard’s comment below) and the passage of a few hours have made me realise that it was wrong of me to communicate this in such a public place…

But, perhaps it as well to know that the life of a lowly Nature Protocols editor occassionally has a stormy teacup. Just in case any of you thought that it was all sweetness and light.

This afternoon, I will channel this vigour into a really promising looking manuscript, and hopefully have a bit of time to do some commissioning-type research.

I realise that it is also bad form to write a post and then delete the important part, and for this I apologise.

Fun. My sympathies… but are you sure those authors aren’t reading this?!

Oh Richard! Thankyou for the sympathy and caution. The right thing to do is, obviously, to communicate my disappointment to the people involved rather than write about it in my blog.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who looses it, vents, and then stops to think oh dear (Or similar!!), probably shouldn’t have said that.

You definitely have my sympathy and I think most people will probably forgive the bad form. Hope the rest of your day is better and that you have a nice calming weekend.

Ah, the old “write letter email, leave on desk in drafts folder, throw out recycle delete the next morning” situation, in blog form.

I’ve seen people delete entire blogs that they thought hadn’t been appropriate. One blog post, I’m sure we can all forgive (not, I rush to point out, that you need the NN community’s forgiveness – it’s your blog, after all).

Hope that manuscript turns out to be tasty, chewy and worthwhile.

I felt like that yesterday afternoon, Bronwen. I fumed and fumed and wanted to let it all out. So instead I took Gee Minor and Heidi the Dog to the beach, and felt much better.

The day has definitely improved – thankyou Richard and Samantha. I think, though, that it would be good if I made a new rule to always go for a walk between getting angry and acting on it.

Relaxing weekend. Beach. hmm. Sounds like a good plan! Hopefully there will be some good weather. :) I envy you your location (and dog), Henry – but luckily the train service from Woking to the coast is good.

I missed the original details, but can sympathize with wondering what the point is…I think we all do that now and then (and anyone who claims he/she doesn’t is lying!).

Just to complete the idea: I went to Portsmouth on Saturday and did some shopping! Usually shopping is a stressful activity, but shopping for china/porcelain is always a pleasure for me. We then went to visit some of Hap’s cousins and she seemed to enjoy herself enormously.

I did have a moment on a train platform when I thought: “We are all going to die.” But that is a completely different sort of “wondering what the point is”, and I moved swiftly on.
