I have returned from maternity leave, and will probably start out by blogging about work, as this seems All Very New again.

    • Commentary: A Nature Protocol

      Thursday, 27 Sep 2007 - 16:18 UTC

      So, What is Nature Protocols?
What is the difference between Nature Protocols and Nature Methods?

These are questions that the editors of this fine journal are frequently asked. An amusing appendage to this question (added by Li Kim’s husband) was “Is it the Protocols that Nature employees need to conform to?”

At the risk of adding to the whole Nature Protocols, Nature Methods confusion, I would like to post a Protocol for Nature (reproduced, with slight editing, with permission from David).

Staff protocol for entering and leaving the buildings

Staff are reminded that the only doors they are permitted to use to enter and leave the buildings are:

      Porters South

      1. Main Reception entrance on Crinan Street.

      2. Wharfdale Road side entrance (adjacent to the garage).

      3. Garage roller shutter on Wharfdale Road, if you are using the facility to park a bicycle/moped/motorbike/car.

      Porters North

Main reception entrance on Crinan Street.

      Pan Macmillan

      1. Main reception entrance on New Wharf Road.

      2. Rear entrance on Lavina Grove.

      General Security / Swipe Cards

Please use your swipe cards to enter the buildings.

Try not to allow people to “tail-gate” and follow you into the buildings, unless you know them. If you do not know the person concerned, politely ask them to wait until the door has closed again, use their swipe card if they have one or speak with Reception or Security personnel through the door intercom system.

All visitors to the buildings must sign in the visitors books at the Reception desks and sign out when they leave.

It is the responsibility of the person they are visiting to collect them from the Reception areas and accompany them back again after their meeting has ended.

If you see anyone acting in a suspicious manner inside one of the buildings or you have reason to belief they do not have a legitimate reason for being in the building, please notify Reception, Security personnel or any member of the London Administration team immediately.

      Additional Swipe Card Information

How Many Swipe Cards Can I Have?

Each member of staff is permitted to have only one swipe card in use at any time.

      Thank you for your co-operation.

I found this protocol, when I received it in my inbox this afternoon, impossible to follow. I am not sure this experiment could be repeated. Maybe we need an annotated summary. Especially the part about tail-gating.

Tail-gating is a funny thing, hey?
          (Funny, but not hilarious…)
I find it surprisingly difficult to turn around to someone and tell them that they cannot follow me inside. Being one of those rare people that is “not good with faces”, I am terribly worried about being rude to someone who might feel that I really should know them. Also, and probably even more embarrassingly, I don’t know what all the “grown-ups” who work at Nature look like – it would be awful to be the person who made Richard Charkin swipe in at the front door!

At the Paterson Institute for Cancer Research (in Manchester), they installed some sort of anti-tail-gating device that was switched on out of hours. This made it so that only one person could enter at a time. If you tried to tail-gate an electronic voice would tell you to use your swipe card (or something to that effect). If your friend didn’t have their card you would have to quickly pass them yours!
