    • Singers on horseback?

      Saturday, 06 Sep 2008 - 11:09 UTC

Like most people with teenage children I occasionally get exposed to popular beat combos on the radio etc.

One song I’ve heard over and over recently that’s really puzzling me is one by Coldplay apparently called Viva la Vida.

The lyrics in the chorus include ‘I hear Jerusalem bells are ringing/Roman cavalry choirs are singing.’

Roman cavalry choirs? All my imaginings of ancient Rome have never encompassed a legion on horseback, belting out the Roman equivalent of Roll out the barrel in four part harmony.

      Boggle.

Coldplay have jumped the shark. That is beyond doubt. However, I don’t think historical accuracy have ever been their strong suit. I would be hard-pressed to name a band that does not sacrifice a good rhyme for the sake of historical fact.
