Grrlscientist has entered a competition for a blogger to go on a cruise to Antarctica, and blog about it. And take photos. And probably fall over and break her arm.
Anyway, you should all go and vote for her (you’ll have to register). and then tell all your friends to vote for her too. Do it, or all the penguins will be sad.

What’s the deadline? (I’m put off by the registration requirement, so I’m going to wait until the very last moment to vote, when it has become unavoidable that I need to give my e-mail address and name to some organization and then endure newsletters until I feel the urge to unsubscribe again.)

Isn’t that one of the criteria, though? The person who can recruit the most people to vote for them, is probably going to be the person with the most readers and therefore the best person to publicise the cruise.

Not necessarily. Some people are popular because they yell and scream a lot. Grrl really would be a good blogger for the occasion, but I can think of several popular bloggers who I would rather send to Antarctica without the convenience of ships, food, and internet access.
Anyway, I’m looking forward to “Guess the Bird” from Antarctica. Maybe I’ll finally be able to get it right if it’s a penguin!

thanks everyone (who voted for me), and watch out for my brigade of trained attack penguins if you didn’t vote for me! the deadline is 30 September 2009 — a million years away. which means anything can happen between now and then. the registration requirement is to make sure your email addresses are valid, not to spam you. no one i know has received any spam yet, although it’s still early in the game. but if you use gmail to register, then you don’t need to worry about spam because the spam filters there are very good — way better than my university email and yahoo email accounts spam filters.
i would love to go on a scientific adventure instead of a cruise ship adventure, but alas, i have been rejected from such things several times already, and i have no special skills that make me uniquely valuable for such an expedition.
i am not going to give quark expeditions my “seal of approval” if they damage the environment, so they may not want me there even if i win if they do not treat the antarctic properly.
