    • Buy Some Ecological Methods!

      Friday, 27 Feb 2009 - 13:21 UTC

I hope none of you will object to a bit of advertising. I’ve been co-editing1 a special issue of Annales Zoologici Fennici on Methods in Ecological Research. I’ll blog more about it when it comes out, but for now here’s an advert in case you want to buy the special issue in one handy bundle of dead tree.

FWIW, I don’t see any of the money, but we do need to cover the cost of production.

Dear colleagues, we are planning on publishing a special issue on Methods in Ecological Research in the journal Annales Zoologici Fennici (2009, second issue). If you are interested in purchasing a copy of this issue, please contact our Managing Editor at sekj@helsinki.fi BEFORE the 15th of March 2009.

The issue consists of six peer reviewed articles and is aimed at those at the onset of their scientific careers, and perhaps even experienced readers of ecology and evolutionary biology, when they start planning and implementing a new study:

      Paper 0. Kotze, D.J. & O’Hara, R.B. Preface – Methods in Ecological Research
Paper 1. Ford, E.D. The importance of a research data statement and how to develop one
Paper 2. Underwood, A.J. Components of design in ecological field experiments
Paper 3. Campbell, D.L.M. et al. Context and control: behavioural ecology experiments in the laboratory
Paper 4. O’Hara, R.B. How to make models add up – a primer on GLMMs
Paper 5. Läärä, E. Statistics: reasoning on uncertainty, and the insignificance of testing null
Paper 6. Harvey, J.A. Preparing a paper for publication: an action plan for rapid composition and completion

The cost of the issue is 25 euros + p&p

1 Most of the hard work was done by Johan, so if you have any negative comments, I will naturally say they’re his fault.

First comment ;-) I’m not the target audience, and yet don’t mind the advert. Funny, that.

Ha haaaa! You have both fallen for my crafty plan to get comments!

I suspect most people would get something out of this special issue. When it comes out, I’ll blog more about it.

Is this gonna be separate to the Ann ZF content that I, and possibly others (in MouthoftheRiver Joensuu) get free through institutional subversion subscription?

I really don’t mind adverts like this, as they are between friends, and even if you’re not the target audience, one can feel a sense of interest in what one’s friends are up to. And if you don’t like the adverts, you can always read something else.

The adverts I don’t like are the intrusive ones that force you to stop what you’re doing. Like, yesterday, I had to stop feeding children/ cleaning up/ blogging to answer the phone, and heard a recorded American voice telling me I’d won something. This is especially awful because I’m registered with the Call Prevention Registry which forbids companies from phoning me for such purposes. Sadly the jurisdiction doesn’t extend to the Land Of The Free (For A Small Fee). Cultural imperialissm, that’s what it is.
