Austin Elliott's profile

I'm male

What I do

- Mostly all that stuff University scientists do.

- Teach science students, medical students, and sundry others (dentists, nurses, pharmacists) general physiology, some pharmacology, bits of other stuff. I seem to be sort of a “specialist non-specialist”.

“Other stuff” includes presentation skills, communication and related issues, inc. scientific fraud, authorship etc. I have even given a lecture pretending to be a homeopath. Strange but true.

- Run a Lab (a very small one!) doing microscope based imaging and similar stuff (mostly measuring intracellular calcium)

- Do University admin work (and that’s quite enough about that)

- Fulminate about this and that – see interests

- Run a quarterly magazine called Physiology News for the Physiological Society

Interests

Having really got into science via watching the moon shots as a child, I have always been interested in how the public at large get their scientific info, what they believe about it, and why. As I have got more middle-aged and grumpy this has manifested as a tendency to rant about misunderstandings of science , especially to do with medicine and biology. Having been inspired (?) by Ben Goldacre’s BadScience blog, I have now got one of my own (semi-anonymously) so I can mutter away to myself in a quiet corner. [Email me if you are interested and can’t find it.]

Apart from occasional ranting here at Nature Network, you may spot me lurking around the “badscience blogosphere”, notably on David Colquhoun’s excellent Improbable Science blog, or here, or here, or on pretty much any of the other blogs in the Bad Science “stable”.

Projects

Working out how to convince my bosses that blogging and writing about popular / bad science is a good use of my time…
