There’s been some talk about if and how you should list your scientific blog on your CV. Such as here and here and here and here too. Ok, so maybe there’s been quite a bit of talk on the subject.
Well I just went over my finished draft of my CV with my PI, in which I listed my blog under the “Awards an Affiliations” section. He saw the link there and said, “How’s that going?…I keep meaning to check it out.”
There was no pause, no worried look, no “ummm, do you think you should put this on your CV?”
My advisor is a mid-to-late 30’s chemistry professor who is relatively internet and technology-savvy, but by no means connected via facebook, myspace, blogging, etc.
So here’s to my boss! It seems my blog is cool with him and gives me hope that other potential employers PIs out there will also be free of any prejudice against blogs and their place on CVs as well!
Though I have no ‘boss’ people at my institute are either cool with or uninterested in my blog, it’s totally a non-issue. The only thing that’s annoying is that people sometimes start a conversation with ’that’s not for the blog’ despite the fact that I never ever reproduce private conversations on my blog without previously asking everybody involved.
Anyway, I guess you should be prepared that you might be asked how much time you spend/intend to spend on your blog if you’re up for an interview. At least I was asked. I had the impression they just wanted to make sure I’m not planning on becoming a full-time blogger.
That is great news. My PI hasn’t mentioned my blog yet, though I think he knows about it. I hope he reacts like yours!
