• PhD to be by Elizabeth Moritz

The final year of graduate school is upon me and my quest to be a PhD is invariably thwarted by the whimsy path research tends to meander down. A little guidance and a lot of patience will be paramount as I make the final push!

    • A micro micro-blogroll

In an effort to stay focused on science while still finding ways to avoid finishing my current manuscript I went searching for microbiology-related blogs to peruse.

I came across these two gems:

Micro Writers is a great blog that goes over developments, research, and news in the microbiology field with enthusiasm (many of the titles include an exclamation point at the end of them). Its a little cheeky but with a clean sort of humor and still discusses some serious issues in the world of microbes.

Adopt a Microbe is a whole other entity. Emma Lurie says in her profile that A Nightmare before Christmas is one of her favorite movies and it shows in her eye-catching drawings of viruses and bacteria. Every few days another slightly macabre figure is posted with a short description of the organism. I find myself unable to stop looking at her drawings.

So there’s my micro micro-blogroll. I hope you’ll check out them out!

I have to add that Micro Writers is strictly written by undergrads (well, one of them graduated but is not a PhD student yet), with minimal interference from me. None of them is a native English speaking, which makes it even harder for them to get their posts out; but I’m surprised at the quality of their writing and at spotting newsworthy scientific stories…

Great recommendations. I have just visited those blogs and I liked very much, particularly the adopt a microbe.
