And how many candles were burned (measure their carbon load)?
And did the turbines really stop spinning or was the ‘excess’ power just earthed, so that exactly the same amount of fossil fuel was burned as normal?

I was skeptical too, until I read that BC Hydro were planning to monitor any dip in electricity use and publish the results. I’m sure the gesture didn’t make any real difference to carbon output, but if it makes politicians realise that their voters take this issue seriously, then it’s worth doing.
And my husband would like to point out to the lady driving down Fraser Street in Vancouver at 8:30 last night that driving without headlights wasn’t supposed to be part of the plan.
BC ‘Hydro’. That’s the carbon-free electricity not being used, then?
Sorry, I am typically cynical. If you want to make a difference, then leave the Chelsea Tractor in the garage. If you want to make a political statement, then lobby for a nuclear powerstation in your home town (seems to work in France).
Not as carbon-free as it used to be. They’ve added natural gas to their hydroelectric capacity, and import some electricity (from Washington State I believe). Everyone here still calls all electricity “hydro” though, which confused me no end when I arrived!
I cycle to work and will vote Green as soon as I get citizenship. That OK? ;)

Given the Canadian government’s recent adventures in running nuclear reactors despite advice to the contrary from safety experts, I’m OK with not pushing for more nuclear power under the current regime!
