I frequently see Vermilion Flycatchers (Pyrocephalus rubinus) at my friends’ ranch, especially when I’m riding or working my horses in the arena. They seem almost friendly and gregarious, while perched on the fence rails or mesquite trees, but of course they’re interested in the insects that are disturbed by and attracted to the horses.

Vermilion Flycatcher (male), colored pencil drawing by YHN
My colored pencil drawing is accompanied by a random collection of words that I like Very Bad Poem, of the free verse variety that Henry loathes.
So if you look at this post, Henry, don’t read the poem. And I’ll stick to the visual arts from now on.
Ha, read one line as “Heedless of the bum ban”. Snigger.
I love the drawing. I’ll wait for Henry to comment on the poem.
@ Sara – Poor font choice on my part!
@ Bob – Thanks! Henry’s not supposed to read the poem.
It totally looks like bum ban. And it’s a beautiful drawing. And nevermind what Henry is going to say of the poem!
The weather is mild here; we have lots of bums, they just can’t burn anything.
I think the poems are Trouble. The drawing I’ll post tomorrow has no poem. :-D
I loved the picture, but couldn’t quite make out the poem. My eyes, you see. Well, that’s my excuse.
“I’ll take All bad poetry is sincere for $500, Alex”.
UPDATE: I was just informed that the “bum ban” poem (and its accompanying drawing) was selected for inclusion in our university arts and literature journal. HAHAHAHAHA! My other two entries, which did not include bad poetry, were not selected.
Upon hearing this news, a friend just said “They must not get many poetry submissions”. :-D
Congratulations! Was it in the arts or the literature section?
That’s beautiful! Have you ever done illustrations for books or textbooks?
In the notification e-mail, it’s under the “literature” section, Bob. Don’t know how it will appear in the university journal … hopefully not sans drawing!
Thanks, Linda … I’ve done a few illustrations, for my thesis and for book chapters I’ve written, but nothing especially artistic, in the context of books or textbooks. Almost everything is unpublished (and unseen) in my journals or sketchbooks.
