There’s a new science blog in town, from the folk at CRUK.

The Science Update blog states three aims: clarifying often contradictory media coverage of cancer stories; highlighting the work of CRUK’s 4000+ scientists; and flagging up other cool cancer research from around the globe—stuff not currently making it into mainstream news.

Nature Networker Ed Yong fronts the new site with co-bloggers (that word really needs a hyphen, lest they become cob-loggers) Kat Arney and Henry Scowcroft. And check out their podcast too, while you’re at it.

          DAY 27.

PLEASE. DO NOT read the below until you’ve listened to the likes of this.

(like 7 minutes of your life – go on, do it. It’s more than worth it)

Great stuff Matt. Thanks muchly for the alert.

I see that CRUK (heaven forbid the acronym for Fever Research UK) formally announced the blog recently on their website.

Directly and indirectly, I’ve been involved in/aware of many fund-raising activities from an early age. This one however stands out by a mile. 3000 miles actually.

3000 MILES. 2 GUYS IN A WOODEN BOAT. 1 GOAL

Since CRUK has been flagged up, I wish to mention the following. Via one of the things that I’m interested in (research wise), in Dec 06, I stumbled upon two very brave guys (Edward Baylis & Stuart Turnbull) who were about to attempt to break the world record for rowing across the Atlantic as a fund-raiser for CRUK. Like countless others, I followed their journey in real time. The daily podcasts are still ingrained in my mind. Ah, here they are.

Unfortunately, Ed & Stu didn’t break the record (man they really really tried), but unlike almost all attempts, they did complete the challenge and raised a phenomenal amount of funding for Cancer Research UK in doing so. From what I can gather though, “fat lady” ain’t singing yet !!

I caught up with Ed last year and take this opportunity to firmly/formally thank all involved in this incredible good news true story.

Just spotted this from one of the team:-

As my eldest sister recently got her biopsy results through, and they were negative, my mum having just the same scare days before I set out for La Gomera, and as our press officer at Cancer Research UK has to move on from our project to focus on the death of a 3 year old cancer victim, there is no stronger reminder to me personally that cancer is as virulent and ugly as ever. It continues to affect the lives of one in three people in the UK. Read that back slowly…. One in three people!! Look around you at work, on the tube, in a bar, in your class… do the sums.

It is time to pull together now folks. Please, please, please, let’s celebrate this incredible adventure, and the spirit in which it was undertaken by making a big final push for this most worthwhile venture. We want to raise a quarter of a million pounds, and we can only do that with your help. There is no “I” in team, and everyone reading this is a team member as far as I am concerned. You lived through the epic with us, and you gave us strength when we had nothing within us to fight with. Let’s pull together once more for a huge finish, and make a significant dent in cancer’s grip on our lives, and the lives of our loved ones. Together, we CAN, and WILL make a difference. Please, dig deep.

For CRUK’s sake Ed (Yong) and cob-lobbers, this adventure MUST be worthy of (your) blog coverage unless you have done so already.

I think CRUK get really pissy if you pronounce it ‘cruk’.

But it’s much better that “Cee Are You Kay”.

And I also vote for cob-loggers.

Yes Richard, I’m certain that indeed is the correct pronunciation.

BTW, I alerted Ed Baylis (chap on the L in photo) to this thread who was most appreciative that I had mentioned their fund-raising activities for “Cee Are You Kay”.
