Musings on London science, from the biggest London obsessive you'll ever meet.

    • Some notes on groups…

We’re seeing an ever-expanding collection of groups (and their associated discussion forums) on Nature Network. Over 250 have now been established, in areas ranging from stem cells to material science.

Of course, many of these are very small, with only a handful of members. But others are thriving, such as Biomolecular NMR, with 65 members. The biggest and best generally have administrators who actively encourage colleagues to join their group.

We’ve purposely left the system very open, so you can set up any Group you wish (as long as it fits within our terms and conditions). However, before creating a Group, you might want to check to see if a similar one already exists using the search feature.

And they’re not all specific to a particular discipline. Here are a few that might appeal to a wide range of scientists.

      Mums in science
Postdocs and graduate students of the world
      Nature Protocols Discussion Forum
      Nature Network Newcomers
      Science and skepticism

There are two groups for PhD students. Which one will grow and thrive? It’s all very Darwinian. Speaking of which

If any of these appeal, take a look, ask questions on the forums and share your experiences.

Is there a way to see a complete list of all groups, with some indication of their degree of vitality/moribundicity ?

I am wondering where I might find a discussion (or stimulate one) of people’s views on the recent government reorganisation, moving OSI out of DTI and into the new DIUS. I can’t see anything obviously discussing policy/government issues.
