    • Friday Fun: Martian eye-candy

Great news for space buffs. Roving Mars is finally coming to London’s BFI Imax screen. The 40-minute documentary follows in the tracks of Spirit and Opportunity, our six-wheeled friends on Mars.

The twin rovers are still going strong. They’ve surpassed their three-month ‘warranty’ by something like 13 times, and collectively covered over ten miles of Martian dirt in three years of operation.

Frustratingly, the movie of their adventures seems to have adopted a similar distance/time ratio in crossing the Atlantic. Roving Mars has been on release in the States for around a year now, but is finally in sight of our shores.

Imax is the perfect format for this material. The rovers have sent back stunning imagery from the Red Planet, and the film makers had a treasure trove of panoramas to draw upon.

Thanks to the rovers’ longevity, the film is already dated. It was stitched together before Opportunity reached the stadium-sized Victoria crater. Nevertheless, this is a mouth-watering prospect for anyone with a passion for space.

Watch this space (pun intended) for a review.

Roving Mars opens on 4 May at the BFI London Imax.
