Genetic analysis of the Tower of London's lions

Scientists from the Natural History Museum have analysed a couple of lion skulls from the Royal Menagerie – London’s first ‘zoo’, which resided at the Tower of London from medieval times.

DNA evidence suggests that the beasts were barbary lions, a black-maned species from North Africa, now extinct in the wild.
